Using RoadFlag
RoadFlag is a free community map of road hazards. Free for personal use. Always. These are the few rules that keep it useful and fair.
- In an emergency, call 999. Lines down, someone hurt or a crash: call 999 first. Power cut: call 105.
- Never use RoadFlag while driving. Pull over somewhere safe, or let a passenger do it.
- Always check the road yourself. Reports come from the public and may be wrong or out of date.
Who runs it
RoadFlag is run by LCM 4x4 Ltd. Contact us at [email protected]. By using RoadFlag you agree to these terms.
Accuracy
Hazard reports are posted by members of the public. We don't check them before they appear, and conditions change fast in bad weather. A road shown as clear may not be, and a hazard shown may have gone. Use RoadFlag as a guide alongside your own judgement, official traffic and council updates, and what you see on the road. RoadFlag is not run by, or connected to, any council, the police or highways authorities.
Fuel prices come from the UK Government's Fuel Finder service and are shown exactly as the forecourt published them. The price at the pump may differ. If a price looks wrong, report it to Fuel Finder using the link on the station.
Posting reports
When you post a report or photo you confirm that:
- it's a real hazard, reported honestly and as accurately as you can;
- you took the photo, or have the right to share it;
- it doesn't include anything offensive or unlawful, or anything that targets a person.
Please avoid number plates and faces in photos where you can. Don't post fake reports, adverts or spam.
Permission to use what you post
You keep ownership of your photos and words. By posting them you give LCM 4x4 Ltd a free, permanent, worldwide permission to show, store, resize, share and include them in RoadFlag and in road-condition information we provide to others – for example local newspapers, radio and other media, councils, bus companies and contractors – and to let those partners publish them, credited to RoadFlag. Reports are anonymous, so we can't credit you by name. If you'd rather a photo wasn't shared, tell us and we'll take it down.
How reports are labelled
Each report shows how many other people have backed it up, by tapping "Still there", "Now passable" or adding a photo. We count different phones, never say who they are, and don't count the person who posted it. Some reports are added by the RoadFlag team from public posts or news reports; partners we share reports with are told which ones.
Moderation
We may edit, move, hide or remove any report, and block a device from posting, if we think it breaks these terms or makes the map less reliable. If something on RoadFlag is wrong, offensive or shows you, tap Report a problem on it or email us, and we'll look at it as soon as we can.
Our responsibility
RoadFlag is provided free and as-is. We do our best to keep it running and accurate but can't promise it will always be available, complete or correct. As far as the law allows, LCM 4x4 Ltd isn't responsible for any loss, damage, delay or injury from relying on RoadFlag, including on reports or fuel prices posted by others. Nothing in these terms limits liability that can't be limited by law, such as for death or personal injury caused by our negligence.
Using RoadFlag's information
You're welcome to view RoadFlag and share links to reports for personal, non-commercial use. Please don't copy, scrape or resell its information in bulk without asking us first. Information from other organisations is listed below.
Where our live information comes from
RoadFlag shows open data from these organisations, under their licences. They don't run or endorse RoadFlag.
- Map: © OpenStreetMap contributors (Open Database Licence). Satellite images © Esri and its partners.
- Official road updates (closures, incidents and roadworks): Traffic Wales (Welsh Government), from its public feeds for motorways and trunk roads. Traffic Wales information line 0300 123 1213.
- Bus service updates: taken from the public service updates pages of TrawsCymru (Transport for Wales), Arriva, First Cymru, Cardiff Bus, Newport Bus, Lloyds Coaches and Pembrokeshire County Council (see the full list on our About page), with a link back to each notice. Not every bus company publishes these, so a route without a red line may still be disrupted.
- River levels: Natural Resources Wales river level gauges (Open Government Licence; contains Natural Resources Wales information © Natural Resources Wales and database right). We only show gauges that are high or rising fast compared with that gauge's own readings over the past year.
- Fords: ford locations from OpenStreetMap (© OpenStreetMap contributors, Open Database Licence). We can't see the fords themselves – a ford is flagged when a nearby river is high.
- Weather warnings: Met Office weather warnings (© Crown copyright, Met Office), from the Met Office's public warnings feed, with a link to each full warning on the Met Office website. Warning areas are drawn from Office for National Statistics council boundaries (Open Government Licence; contains OS data © Crown copyright and database right).
- Flood warnings and alerts: Contains Natural Resources Wales information © Natural Resources Wales and database right (Open Government Licence). Flood area outlines from DataMapWales.
- Power cuts: National Grid Electricity Distribution open data, and SP Energy Networks open data (CC BY 4.0).
- Bus routes: Traveline National Dataset (Open Government Licence).
- Fuel prices: the UK Government's Fuel Finder service (Open Government Licence).
